Using A Herbal Colon Cleanse? Is It Safe? - Part 2

Another main ingredient of many herbal cleansers is Cascara Sagrada. This name is used generically to describe the aged bark of several species of Buckthorn shrub.

Cascara and its derivatives were banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from use in non-prescription laxatives in 2002 due to lack of supportive evidence they were either safe or effective. The FDA however failed to protect consumers from manufacturers who include Cascara in “Dietary supplements” which includes herbal colon cleansers.

Cascara is "Sneaked" into Herbal cleansers by disguising it as part of a “proprietary blend” or by listing it by its lesser-known name “buckthorn bark.” Check for the fine-print disclaimers about products containing this dangerous ingredient, this is to presumably protect themselves against potential lawsuits. It’s unfortunate that many companies use such products at the risk of harming unaware consumers who are trying to improve their health.

One of the main dangers of Herbal Cleansers is that each person’s internal chemistry can react quite differently to various substances (an allergic reaction). While trusting & under the assumption that they are improving their health they could actually be irritating their digestive system and possibly contributing to their constipation. Cascara Sagrada is one such substance which can cause a reaction in many.
